# One in five BRSR filings differs between NSE and BSE

We compared the NSE and BSE copies of 4,128 company-years of BRSR filings. In 822 of them, the two copies disagree somewhere.

Key finding: 822 of 4,128 company-years filed on both exchanges (20%) have NSE and BSE copies that differ.

Listed companies in India file their Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) with the stock exchanges, in XBRL and as a PDF. Most investors, raters and data providers assume the copy on NSE and the copy on BSE are the same document. We checked.

## What we compared

We collected every BRSR filing from FY2021-22 to FY2025-26 for the 1,289 companies that file on both NSE and BSE, and compared the two XBRL copies fact by fact. Facts were matched on the reported concept, its dimensions (for example gender or site) and the period, not on internal identifiers, which change between taxonomy versions.

## What we found

- **822 of 4,128 company-years (20%)** with one filing on each exchange differ in at least one fact.
- **The gap between filing dates is the strongest signal.** Copies filed days or months apart differ far more often (between 47% and 93% of pairs, depending on the gap) than copies filed on the same day. The exchanges often hold different versions of the same submission.
- **Same-day copies are not always identical either.** 496 of 3,693 same-day pairs (13%) differ, mostly in text and in how tables are structured; 38 of them had numeric or unit differences.
- **A copy can lose its unit.** A recurring pattern is a value tagged as unit-less on one exchange and as kilolitres, tonnes or gigajoules on the other.
- **Most numeric differences are not simple scaling.** Of 3,578 numeric differences, 70 are powers of ten and 379 are rounding; the rest carry different content.

In a separate random sample, read value by value, the two exchange copies carried different values for 2.3% of the values present on both (18 of 774; 95% CI 1.5–3.6%).

## Why it matters

Whoever reads your BRSR picks one copy. A rater using BSE and a fund using NSE can see different numbers for the same company and year, and neither knows the other exists. With BRSR Core now subject to assurance or assessment for the largest listed companies, "which copy is the filing?" is a question you want to answer before someone else asks it.

## What to do before and after filing

1. File both exchanges on the same day, from the same source file.
2. After filing, download both XBRL copies and compare them, not just the PDFs.
3. Keep the source of every number, so a difference can be explained in minutes rather than weeks.

Sustainize produces both outputs from one checked dataset, keeps an audit trail for every value, and reminds the team to compare the exchange copies after filing. You can try the [BRSR filing check in the live demo](/demo/).

## Method and caveats

- Figures are aggregate. We do not name companies; a difference between copies is a discrepancy, not a judgement on compliance.
- Text differences include harmless variants (capitalisation, punctuation, a URL with or without "www") as well as real content changes; we have not yet classified every one.
- Why same-day copies differ is not established. One hypothesis, unverified, is that each exchange regenerates the XBRL from the company's upload with its own converter.
