# Emissions intensity of Indian listed companies: FY2024-25 benchmarks by sector

Median Scope 1 + 2 intensity per ₹ crore of turnover from FY2024-25 BRSR filings is 11.5 tCO2e for oil, gas and refining, 62.9 for steel and 1.0 for banks.

Key finding: Median Scope 1 + 2 intensity: 11.5 tCO2e per ₹ crore in oil, gas and refining; 62.9 in steel; 1.0 in banks.

"How do we compare?" is the first question a board asks about an emissions number. We computed sector benchmarks from FY2024-25 BRSR filings so the answer can start from real data.

## Scope 1 + 2 intensity per ₹ crore of turnover

| Peer group | Companies with a value | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, gas and refining | 11 | 5.2 | 11.5 | 68.4 |
| Basic metals and steel | 45 | 27.9 | 62.9 | 301.8 |
| Banks and financial services | 90 | 0.42 | 1.02 | 1.62 |
| All listed companies | 824 | 2.6 | 11.7 | 44.5 |

Figures in tonnes of CO2-equivalent per ₹ crore of turnover.

## Energy, water and people

| Peer group | Energy (GJ per ₹ crore) | Water withdrawal (kL per ₹ crore) | Women among employees | Women on the board |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, gas and refining | 151 | 72 | 9.7% | 14.3% |
| Basic metals and steel | 524 | 221 | 4.8% | 16.7% |
| Banks and financial services | 5.6 | 6.7 | 23.7% | 16.7% |
| All listed companies | 79 | 80 | 9.1% | 16.7% |

Medians across companies in each group.

## Reading these numbers

- **The spread matters as much as the median.** In steel, the 75th percentile is almost five times the median: integrated producers and processors sit in the same group.
- **The oil and gas group is small.** Only 11 companies report both emissions and turnover cleanly, so treat its percentiles as indicative.
- **Turnover needs cleaning first.** A share of filings report turnover with a scale error, which makes a naive intensity calculation wildly wrong. Values flagged as impossible are excluded.

## Method

- One primary filing per company and year, FY2024-25; only values that pass our quality flags.
- Sector is the most frequent 2-digit NIC division among the products and services each company reports in BRSR Section A.
- Intensity divides by turnover in ₹ crore. Shares are computed from reported head counts.
- Groups with fewer than ten companies are not published. No company is named.
